Spain
is the most mountainous country in Europe after Switzerland, with dramatic changes occurring from steppes to high country very quickly.  This eight day tour combines exciting hikes with Catalan culture and excellent cuisine.

Day 1: For those who have been on the Southern Spain tour, we will be flying from Seville to Barcelona on the evening of Sept 15th. (One hour flight). We'll stay overnight near the city center. For those newly arriving for this tour, we will meet at our hotel in Barcelona at 11:00 on the 16th. From here it is two hours to our first hotel - the wonderful Parador in the old market town of Cardona in the Pre-Pyrenees. The Cardona region offers a marvelous introduction to this area, with a low population density, winding roads and picturesque villages on hillsides and cliffs. Afternoon walk on old farm trails help us to get a first taste of the region.

The high Pyrenees

Day 2 - 4: We’ll turn our face northwards to the high Pyrneees, heading to the region of the National Park of Aigüestortes.  The blend of high mountains, forests, rivers, lakes and valleys, populated with their mammals (including chamois and alpine

marmot), butterflies, plants and birds makes this an ideal spot for all kinds of nature lovers.

High mountain trails, numerous lakes and varied terrain offer the possibilities of many different excursions. In the high Pyrenees, enigmatic birds such as Wallcreeper, Lammergeier, Snowfinch, Alpine Accentor &  Alpine Chough are found. Two nights in Espot, a tiny mountain village in the national park. See our Peregrinatio  blog for a short article on one of our hikes here.

Day 5 & 6:  We’ll head east to Puicerda, (two nights) to spend our final days taking in some of the best hikes and sights of this fabulous area. Mountain villages, Romanesque churches, old mines and more attest to the long relationship of man with this rugged terrain.  This is a popular summer and winter resort, offering a great range of hiking and activities near the French border.

Day 7:  Depart for Barcelona for a final afternoon walking the old quarter of this wonderful city.

Day 8: Depart for the airport for flights home.
